RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology)

In August 2007, Reltronics Technologies deployed the RFID system at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), New York, specifically at the College of Applied Science and Technology. The Telecommunication Engineering and Technology laboratory maintains a track of its assets using the RFID asset tracking solution deployed by Reltronics Technologies. Devices are maintained in an inventory that helps the faculty retain a track of the assets that are utilized in the laboratory. RIT can now keep a track of the assets that are relocated or even replaced after maintenance.

To make this happen, tags are attached to these devices that are tracked via an RFID antenna. Each tag has a unique ID number associated to it, which is transferred from the tags to an RFID reader. The reader is connected to the antenna and transfers the read tag data to a middleware equipment called the SmartInstrument. The SmartInstrument is an embedded system, an edge server, and a network appliance, developed by Reltronics Technologies that integrates the collected data. The SmartInstrument retrieves the information using the TCP/IP interface. The asset management solution software, called the ReALTrack AMS, generates tracking records for the assets that are monitored showing their status in terms of their location. The ReALTrack AMS raises alarms and notification when the assets are taken out of the laboratory or when tags are pulled off the devices.

This system is alarm monitored to ensure the assets are not moved to a location outside the laboratory.

RIT utilizes this system for educational purposes to provide technology exposure to students as well. Although RFID is not yet a part of the Telecommunication Engineering and Technology department’s course curriculum, they are now considering the technology to be offered for research to students to develop on. The successful implementation of the RFID system has encouraged the department to contemplate appending this to the existing course curriculum, providing profound knowledge into the technology.

Rochester Institute of Technology Announces the Selection of Reltronics Technologies' SmartInstrument(TM) for Equipment Asset Management

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Sept. 24 / -- Rochester Institute of Technology (www.rit.edu) has deployed Reltronics Technologies' (www.reltronicstech.com) SmartInstrument(TM) and the ReALTrack-AMS, the asset management system based upon Reltronics Technologies' ReALTrack framework for tracking equipment in their laboratories. To further the partnership, Reltronics Technologies has announced collaboration with RIT. RIT is known for their innovative applied research. Reltronics Technologies (www.reltronicstech.com) has several divisions and is known for their versatile RFID middleware and sensor integration solutions including edge server appliances (such as the SmartInstrument), inbound and outbound 24/7 customer hotline services, IT application development, business and knowledge process outsourcing services, and expert panel presentations in key RFID events. They are assisting numerous companies with managed and outsourced services as well.

"The decision to go for Reltronics Technologies was due to their depth of understanding in the RFID arena and their simultaneous support of multiple RFID technologies, active and passive. They have been methodical in their approach towards deploying convergent radio frequency identification (RFID) systems which dynamically track assets and their 24/7 technical support is becoming a benchmark in the industry. Also, they have several deployments in universities and their assistance to universities is commendable. We are already looking at further expanding our RFID capability in partnership with Reltronics Technologies." said Professor Chance Glenn of RIT. "The selection of Reltronics Technologies by RIT for deploying an RFID system fortifies Reltronics Technologies' position in the RFID middleware world and in asset management. We have deployed several systems in universities worldwide and this is another example of our technology at work. We continuously support system integrators and solution providers with our 24/7 hotline support as well." said Dr. Sanjay Ahuja, President & CEO of Reltronics Technologies.

The collaboration benefits RIT and Reltronics Technologies on multiple fronts including project development, student educational and internship opportunities, RFID laboratory/ competency development, co-development of RFID standards, and co-authoring on federal proposals and grants. RFID collaboration will be mutual and will exercise the experience of Dr. Chance Glenn at RIT and Dr. Sanjay Ahuja at Reltronics Technologies.

Since active and passive systems, both communicating with the SmartInstrument(TM), have now been successfully deployed and tested, RIT is looking forward to have access to the elaborate applications offered by Reltronics Technologies in automating asset, record, and inventory management, identifying drug pedigrees, etc. For further information, email: info@reltronicstech.com, visit www.reltronicstech.com, or call +1(877) 283- 7826.
